Munze Österreich AG
The roots of the state coinage in Austria go back to the year 1194, the first documented mention of the “Wiener Pfennige” dates back to 1203. In 1397 the “Wiener Münze” was also mentioned for the first time in a document. Today the Austrian Mint is the only official mint of Austria.
In 1989 the old main mint got a new name and became Münze Österreich AG – a subsidiary of the Austrian National Bank with a stake in the Swiss LBMA-certified refinery Argor-Heraeus.

Vienna Philharmonic
The gold Vienna Philharmonic one ounce (Troy ounce) coin: the king of bullion coins and the best-selling size. First introduced in 1989 along with the 1/4 ounce version, it holds a full ounce of gold (31.1 grams). The Troy ounce is the weight unit of the precious metal trade and the classic weight of gold coins. It has a face value of 100 Euros. According to the World Gold Council, it was the world’s best-selling gold coin in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2000.
Ducat
The golden ducat was minted from the 16th century, which always showed the current regent on the obverse and the double-headed eagle on the reverse. From 1858 the gold ducat was no longer considered official currency, but it was still minted as a bullion coin. The ducat is still minted today, but since 1920 there have only been restrikes, all of which show the year of the last official minting of 1915.
Thaler
Probably the most famous silver coin in the world, the Maria Theresa thaler made of 833‰ silver, has been issued by the Austrian Mint or the former Vienna Main Mint since 1741. The coin has appeared unchanged since Maria Theresa’s death in 1780 and has since been minted more than 30 million times.
